Netscape 4.08 (Win 3.1) shows empty page for svardos.org

Netscape Communicator 4.08 (Win 3.1 + TCP/IP 3.11b) renders an empty page when accessing svardos.org. It seems to silently abort the loading (page source does not show anything). Sadly it does not deliver any meaningful log. Does the webserver log indicate why this does not work? Same IP as always (and this post).

Below are the logs related to your IP, with all "modern" entries filtered out. It appears your browser is using HTTP/1.0 - I am not sure therefore if it supports multi-hosting at all (ie. if it provides a "host: svardos.org" header in its requests). If not, then the server cannot guess which site you wish to get and displays a default page that is mostly blank. root@kraken:/var/log/apache2# cat svardos.log | grep 87.78 | grep -v NetNews | grep -v Macintosh | grep -v Gecko | grep -v Firefox 216.244.66.249 - - [26/Dec/2025:06:13:31 +0000] "GET /download/20220314/svardos-20220314-usb.zip HTTP/1.1" 200 1872789 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; DotBot/1.2; +https://opensiteexplorer.org/dotbot; help@moz.com)" 37.187.78.82 - - [17/Jan/2026:20:15:37 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 2519 "http://svardos.org/"; "LivelapBot/0.2 (http://site.livelap.com/crawler)"; 52.53.187.78 - - [17/Feb/2026:06:50:16 +0000] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 404 530 "-" "node" 37.187.78.82 - - [19/Feb/2026:15:11:42 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 2519 "http://svardos.org/"; "LivelapBot/0.2 (http://site.livelap.com/crawler)"; 87.78.98.175 - - [24/Feb/2026:19:45:36 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.61 [en] (OS/2; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [24/Feb/2026:19:45:36 +0000] "GET /style.css HTTP/1.0" 200 1306 "-" "Mozilla/4.61 [en] (OS/2; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [24/Feb/2026:19:45:56 +0000] "GET /?p=repo HTTP/1.0" 200 18998 "http://svardos.org/"; "Mozilla/4.61 [en] (OS/2; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [24/Feb/2026:19:49:38 +0000] "GET /?p=help HTTP/1.0" 200 848 "http://svardos.org/?p=repo"; "Mozilla/4.61 [en] (OS/2; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [24/Feb/2026:19:49:41 +0000] "GET /phpamb.php?fname=help/help-en HTTP/1.0" 200 1009 "http://svardos.org/?p=help"; "Mozilla/4.61 [en] (OS/2; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [24/Feb/2026:19:49:42 +0000] "GET /phpamb.css HTTP/1.0" 200 773 "-" "Mozilla/4.61 [en] (OS/2; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [24/Feb/2026:19:49:47 +0000] "GET /phpamb.php?fname=help/help-en&f=commands.ama HTTP/1.0" 200 2098 "http://svardos.org/phpamb.php?fname=help/help-en"; "Mozilla/4.61 [en] (OS/2; U)" 83.255.152.5 - - [07/Jul/2026:20:05:08 +0000] "GET /download/20220314/svardos-20220314-usb.zip HTTP/1.1" 200 1872789 "-" "CyotekWebCopy/1.9 CyotekHTTP/6.4" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:20:41:38 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:20:41:49 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:20:42:21 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:20:42:26 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2555 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:20:42:59 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:20:44:07 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:20:45:08 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [29/Aug/2026:21:16:35 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [01/Sep/2026:20:59:12 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [07/Sep/2026:17:33:15 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [07/Sep/2026:17:33:25 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [07/Sep/2026:17:36:48 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [07/Sep/2026:17:43:59 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [07/Sep/2026:17:55:15 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" 87.78.98.175 - - [07/Sep/2026:17:55:55 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 2556 "-" "Mozilla/4.08 [en] (Win16; U)" root@kraken:/var/log/apache2#

Even Netscape 4.08 should be able to render this HTML response. I guess it discards the response completely as the server returns a HTTP/1.1 answer while the client establishes the connection via HTTP/1.0...

Possible, but such behavior is very common across web servers, and does not seem to be against RFC 1945 (later RFCs even encourage it). I tried to fiddle with the apache2 config, but did not find any easy way to make it answer with HTTP/1.0. I guess it is a moot exercise anyway, since a true HTTP/1.0 client wouldn't know about the "Host" header. All I can say is that the queries do get to the server, and the server is responding something. If you'd happen to have a tcpdump (pcap) capture of your exact query/response, then maybe we could confirm what's going on exactly. Mateusz

It's not that important to me to setup a packet capture for this :) However, in the long term it would be nice to have the SvarDOS website (mainly the package list) accessible via the latest iterations of some commonly known DOS/Win3.1 browsers (Netscape 4.08, Internet Explorer 5), or via Gopher...
